How a weirdo sees the world…

“If you talk to God…

god“If you talk to God, you are praying; If God talks to you, you have schizophrenia.”

Thomas Szasz

I think Szasz is a brilliant man.
A common positive symptom of schizophrania is having delusion of reference (attaching special or personal to object or people that one encounters), e.g. interpreting everyday occurances as a sign of God, a message. Another is hearing (God’s) voice or seeing seeing Christ (auditory or visual hallucinations). How can you distinguish a religious and a mentally ill person? When do you call it enlightenment and when madness? Who decides?
How can you even know that the prophets of the bible did not suffer from a mental disorder? Even today, we know little about illnesses like schizophrenia, in the past we knew even less. God’s creation of the world and its inhabitants is challenged by Darwin’s theory of evolution, and daily ridiculed by more and more scientific discoveries. Uncertainties and disagreements as far as the eye can see. How do we know? We don’t! We just choose to believe.

Interesting thought… At the end of the day, religion is a belief, spirituality a personal experience…
